About Markus Winand
It all started in the 80's with a Commodore VIC-20 from a friend—a truly impressive machine when I was eight years old. It took a year before I had saved up the money and became the proud owner of a C64—my programming career had begun.
My professional career begun with a job as C programmer for UNIX environments at magnet—the largest Austrian internet provider at that time. The next step was to build the entire ISP infrastructure for a telecom startup jointly with three colleagues.
Software quality and availability turned out to be my main area of interest very early. High Availability environments—both commercial and open source solutions products—are still part of my daily work today.
In the following years, I was jointly responsible for the smooth operation of the e-brokerage platform of a major Austrian bank. My focus was on technical software quality—an area in which I was able to achieve a profound expertise. In 2005, I was entrusted to lead a team of six to adopt the platform for a CEE branch of the bank.
Following the successful completion of the project, I became the senior architect of the department and was later appointed as head of division-wide architecture team. This included several trips to India to manage the technical quality of the developers working there.
Since 2009 I work as an independent consultant specializing in "technical software quality." Thereby, it became my main mission to help developers using SQL databases to the best possible extent.
